Rediscovering My Runner’s High

IMG_5727.jpg

It’s been a while since I felt a true runner’s high. And not for lack of running… I’ve been logging my miles since the SF Marathon, with these three months seeing a few hundred miles run as well as three half marathons raced and one spectated while running farther than the course distance. But something has just been missing. That feeling where everything clicks.

I fell in love with running during my first marathon training cycle somewhere after 11 miles. I realized that no matter what I tend to hate the first 5 miles of a run. Sad but true. Hence my twitter headline saying I need 10K to warm up. I really do! There was something about coming back from a 16, 18, or 20+ mile run totally wasted but also kind of floating on endorphins. I finally found that again today!

I did NOT want to wake up at 7 this morning but after hitting snooze til 7:30, seeing everyone’s tweets about the Marine Corps Marathon dragged me out of bed. There was a 4-mile race happening on the Great Highway that Cate and Alyssa would be at, so I had to make it down. I got dressed and then got on my way. The only problem was that there was a 4-mile run for me to just GET to the race! Luckily it was running DOWN MLK which is SO. MUCH. EASIER. I was trying to take it really slow and somewhat succeeded.

4 mi run to race: 35:43

IMG_5706

I got down there and connected with Cate and family. I love DSE races. So chill and such a fun environment. I need to commit to getting to know a lot of these people!

IMG_5710

IMG_5713

When the race started we started in the back since they had the baby stroller. Unfortunately for everyone in front of us, Cate and Mike are faster than the majority of the crowd even when pushing baby! I hung with them for the first 1.5 mile or so and then they hightailed it out of there, picking off people one by one. Alyssa managed to sprint her fast feet up to catch up with us and I stayed with her til right around the turnaround and then I dropped back. I was not feeling great and just out to have fun and try to survive 12-13 mi for the day. I took a 30 second walking break to take off my long sleeve shirt (oops) which meant readjusting iPod and Garmin. Then I finished out by counting the alphabet backwards as I passed the Sunset streets (Santiago… Rivera… Pacheco…)

IMG_5724

I kept in minimal effort mode because I knew I still had miles in front of me, but it was fun to participate!

  • Mile 1: 9:2X (weaving with stroller)
  • Mile 2: 8:26
  • Mile 3: 8:53 (walk break)
  • Mile 4 kind of: 7:45 (it was only 0.95 mile)

So I’ve got a new 3.95M PR of 34:32 despite the walking and slowness. Woot!

IMG_5721

After that, I hung out and dawdled and filled my water bottle and fueled up with 3 mini chocolate chip cookies. I REALLY needed the calories after running 8 miles on only one graham cracker. I’m a big breakfast before long run person, but I got out of bed only 30 minutes before I had to run so it didn’t happen.

IMG_5717

After that, I just wanted to get a ride HOME! I was tired and over the running thing. However, I knew that Kristine and Alyssa were doing laps at Stow Lake and I hadn’t seen Kristine since the Giant Race so I decided I’d make the trudge over to Stow Lake to see them. Two slow miles UP MLK (ugh) and I was there. One break for this:

IMG_5730

IMG_5732

I was feeling okay and figured I’d do one lap with them and then head home for 13 for the day, keeping with my goal of running at least 13.1 miles per weekend even though I’m not training for anything.

IMG_5737

Imagine my surprise when I saw Layla and Karin there as well! This is when my day totally turned around. We headed out together around Stow Lake. And then I had so much fun catching up with Kristine and chatting with the others that I ended up running 3. At that point I decided I should probably run another half lap so then with my 2 miles home it would make 16 miles for the day.

IMG_5741IMG_5745

Total: 16 miles/2:26, 9:07 pace

From miles 10 to 16, I felt better every mile. My legs got looser and wanted to run faster than they were. While I had wanted to walk so much between miles 4-8 (in a “race”!), I didn’t even want to stop. I almost headed back into the park for another 2 to make it 18 for the day, but then I realized I haven’t hit 15+ in three months, so why risk it when my knee was bothering me a bit anyway. My last mile I was just so happy, because I remembered why I love to run. It’s that feeling, ten miles in, with no clock ticking to stress me out, with friends nearby to support, with nowhere to be or go, the only goal just to move and enjoy running for running’s sake.

IMG_5742

Today was awesome. I loved this run and it reminded me that I CAN run despite my confidence issues as of late and that I can rock a distance run even if I’ll never be speedy. That doesn’t mean I can’t love it.

When I got home, I was famished. I had only had those three cookies which seemed like a lot at the time (maybe 200 calories?) but after 16+ miles on just those calories and the graham cracker I was dying. I knew exactly how to get delicious and replenishing fuel into me FAST:

IMG_5746

One cup chocolate milk + one frozen banana + one spoon PB. Everything you need. And amazing.

IMG_5750

After a good bit of dawdling and lounging around in my bathrobe (TMI?), I jumped on my bike to meet Alyssa at Quickly for some really (not) nutritious and very much needed post-run fuel. (She did 20 and kicked ASS.) I had a lovely bike ride over to the Richmond—really getting the hang out riding in traffic. Still scary but I MUST attempt a ride to work this week—I’m thinking Tuesday.

IMG_5758 IMG_5760

We got Oreo Snows with large tapioca and fries (curly for her, sweet potato for me). It was absolutely just what the doctor ordered.

After some time lounging around the wave of post run tiredness hit me HARD. I had wanted to hike up Twin Peaks, but a 16 mile run + bike ride +strenuous hike seemed a little bit much for the one day. But all told, this was the absolute perfect Sunday.

I’ve got a busy week in front of me which will culminate in the FOODBUZZ FESTIVAL next weekend! I am seriously excited for that. I’ve got a few goals for the week:

  • Two good weight training sessions
  • Four runs
  • No junk food at the office. Fo realz this time.
  • GO TO BED BEFORE 11. I was up til 1-2am every night last week (college flashback!) and I piad for it. Sleep matters!
  • BUY A DIGITAL CAMERA!!! I need recommendations stat. Anyone?? Something that is purse-able if not pocket-able, that I can carry around easily, not super complicated, Please advise if you have any recommendations!
Hope you all had a WONDERFUL weekend!

Weekend Roundup and Weekly Goals.

IMG_5222.jpg

Hello all! Hope you all had a wonderful weekend. I had a great one, a highlight being a Blogger Meetup but that’s a separate post for tomorrow perhaps, once I steal some pictures. As apparently amidst organizing a blogger meetup I lost all blogger photo-taking tendencies. Oh well.

IMG_5222

One of my best friends was in town this weekend, which I’d been looking forward to for awhile. I love having friends in town, because it makes you make time for fun things that often get lost during the day-to-day. We headed out for an evening of drinking and eating in the Marina district, which is usually too fratty and full of girls in ass-length skirts and ridiculous heels they can’t walk in for my taste, but it can also be somewhat fun and it was also overrun with cute marines and navy dudes in uniform, which come on, is adorable. Even if the average age is 20.

IMG_5228

My eating was off all day due to the meetup and snacking but after a long night with not enough food I finally got to eat at Pizza Orgasmica, which, if you can get over the name, has pretty freaking amazing pizza.

IMG_5231

I also finally stopped into American Cupcake to take one to go. Monique had recommended this to me ages ago so I was excited to pick one up to bring home. And a cupcake shop that’s open til midnight? These people are geniuses.

IMG_5230

This morning I woke after not enough sleep to meet Renee for a 10-mile run in GGP. It was a lovely run and I was just happier than I have been on a run in months. It was nice to run slower at recovery pace and just talk and not be alone with my head. So nice. Renee also introduced me to Sport Beans which I found amazing. GU is so convenient with the size but I ALWAYS get side stitches, so I need to suck it up and start carrying something like this or chomps with me. Or…

IMG_5243

After I was really hungry (didn’t eat enough beforehand) and grabbed a handful of candy corn to bring with me on my way out the door for brunch. I’m also considering carrying a handful of THIS on a run. Haha. I think I just respond better to solid stuff than the gel, but we’ll see. But would candy corn melt? I’m not sure. I am going to try it.

IMG_5239

I met Talia and Beth at It’s Tops which is an adorable diner on the corner of Market and Octavia streets that Alyssa introduced me to after our Half Moon Bay spectator-fest. It was after noon at this point and none of us had eaten real food so we were all starving. I was also getting into the post-run calorie-deficit anger stage which needed to be remedied immediately.

IMG_5235

Beth and I split a vanilla shake…

And Talia and I ordered banana pancakes and a mushroom, bell pepper and onion omelet and split both.

IMG_5253

(Butter expertly removed by Talia but I made her let me take a picture of it first. There’s something classic about pats of butter on a stack of pancakes, no?)IMG_5249

Unsurprisingly, it was all delicious. And fueled us up for our walk into the Mission to go shopping. I bought a dress and a belt from a cute boutique, and two things I absolutely didn’t need:

IMG_5263

A penguin wristlet purse thing. Come on, it’s cute.

IMG_5261

And even more ridiculous… cookie-shaped key covers. Now one of my keys is a vanilla Oreo and the other a classic. Anything to make me smile a couple more times a day, right?

And what I absolutely should have bought but did not: the hamburger purse. Seriously.

IMG_5255

I am excited for this week because it’s the Nike Women’s Marathon next weekend! I am really looking forward to it. But with how exhausted I have been and how my diet has been off, I really need to set priorities for the week. (I know my blog often features my ridiculous dessert postings, I in no way pretend to be a “look at the healthy food I eat!” blog, but with that being said the majority of my meal choices are healthy—though when I get busy occasionally dinner is peanut butter pretzels so that’s what I need to work on.)

If I want to have fun through every mile of Nike and avoid a crash like at San Jose Rock & Roll last weekend, I am aiming for the following for this week:

  • 7 hours of sleep each night. I need 8, but I’m trying to set an attainable goal here.
  • Exercise every day Monday through Friday—but don’t go overboard. I tried to run 10 days in a row right before SJRNR, which is too tiring for my legs. I will do varied and well-rounded workouts all week to stay energized.
  • Eat clean. Eat clean. Eat clean. This is the biggest one. I don’t mean “nothing unhealthy at ALL,” as I plan to get Quickly bubble tea tomorrow night and am doing a brewery tour on Friday with my office—I just mean my meals should be well rounded with carbs, protein and fruits/veggies and not haphazard.
  • Snack smart at the office. Apple and string cheese = smart. Honey Nut Cheerios = not so much.
  • De-stress. I have been too stressed lately. I will make a conscious effort this week to step back

These are really life goals not just for this week alone, but I hope I can concentrate on them this week and I’m not hitting the teddy grahams by 2PM tomorrow. Keep me accountable, blog of mine.

Have a wonderful start to your week everyone!

Courtney

  • Race Recap: San Jose Rock & Roll Half Marathon

    IMG_4983.jpg

Yesterday I ran my third half marathon at the Dodge San Jose Rock & Roll. I had initially wanted to do the race but couldn’t afford it, but then my lovely (and generous!) friend Alyssa gifted me a bib she couldn’t use, so I was psyched for the opportunity. Unfortunately, work and life got in the way of proper race planning and before I knew it I was arriving home after 11PM the night before the race, not quite sure where to go the next morning, where the race started, etc etc AND having eaten a dinner that consisted of more bad beers than I remember and various cookies consumed at a tailgate at the UCLA/Stanford football game. Not the smartest pre-race plan.

    IMG_4983

My alarm went off at 4:45AM Sunday, giving me approximately 15 minutes to get ready—I had to get my bib race day morning which I knew could be a pain. However when the alarm went off I pressed snooze because I had no idea why I was waking up so early! CLEEEEARLY not in race mindset. Then I remembered five minutes later and actually jumped out of bed.

    IMG_5001

I got ready quickly, shoved a bunch of other stuff I thought I might need in a bag and drove down to SJ. The combo of “crap I’m late” and exactly ZERO cars on the road meant that I was parked in the HP Pavilion parking lot at oh, 6:04AM. For a 8AM race. And it was still completely dark out. I hung out in the car for a little eating my breakfast and then headed out to find my bib.

    IMG_5009

…Which took about 45 minutes. I got pointed everrrrry which direction and finally got the bib after 7AM. I did a mass tweet to try to meet up with Michelle, Renee, Dennis, Audrey, or Jana but ended up kind of wandering around. It was getting decently warm already so I was more than comfortable in my running skirt, short-sleeve top and arm warmers. It started to get REALLY crowded after 7 and it was pretty fun to see so many people. I headed to my corral (4, 1:55 expected finish time) and said hi to the birthday girl on the way.

    IMG_5021

    IMG_5016

    IMG_5023

The race started and I was off. I had a goal of a 1:55 (PR) that I thought should be easy given the fat and fast course. My first two half marathons I both ran in 1:58, the Shamrock’n Half and the Giant Race, so I figured this would not be too tricky.

That’s an 8:55 pace, but I was apparently excited did my first five miles around an 8:40 average.

The one problem: at the start line, I had to pee. I figured it was just nervousness and would go away, but it didn’t. I never have had to stop to use the bathroom during a race before but by mile 4 I was actually in pain. I did NOT want to lose time because I knew that stopping for the bathroom + stopping running in general would kill my PR chances. But I had banked a minute or so and somewhere around mile 5.5 I stopped at a portapotty.

Bad idea. These weren’t race portapotties, they were permanent ones with no TP and total gag fest. I lost the minute and change but pressed on. Shoulda just peed, oops. Somewhere around 10K marker I found race potties and jumped in. I tried to make it quick but with the fuel belt and the iPod and stuff I ended up losing about 2 minutes, and change. Now I was about 3-4 minutes delayed. But I still had a chance.

But then something in me just died. At the 10K sign all I wanted to do was walk. WALK! In a half marathon! I’ve never done this. I am fine with walking through aid stations (to actually get to DRINK the water) but I had never walked for reals in a half marathon and I didn’t even walk until mile 16 during Big Sur full. But I just couldn’t do it.

    IMG_5027

The rest of the race was a mental disaster. It was like nothing was wrong (my body was in fine shape), but yet everything was. I just kept walking, my heart rate was through the roof. I looked around wondering why I was the only one walking (um, because you’re with the 1:50-2:00 runners and thus everyone is RUNNING). I kept telling myself “30 second break after the next mile” but couldn’t even seem to walk a mile without stopping. I texted Alyssa at mile 9 to tell her I was thinking about a DNF. I just was so embarrassed I was having so much trouble and my mind was playing horrible tricks on me. “why are you walking, slacker?” “how the heck do you plan to run a 3:59 marathon if you can’t even jog a nine-minute-mile without stopping?” “you can never run a marathon again.” etc. I tried REALLY hard to beat the demons and when I saw the 2:00 pacer past me I felt my heart clunk. More negative thoughts. Then I realized my mind was being my enemy and that even if I was going to PW, I damn well wasn’t going to throw everything away.

I walked consistently throughout the second half of the race to get my heart rate down and finished the race in 2:01.

    IMG_5048 IMG_5028

     IMG_5029 IMG_5034

This was an interesting race for a variety of reasons. One, it was only three minutes slower than my previous half-marathons despite stopping for 3-4 minutes for the bathroom. Meaning, I would have PR’ed if I just didn’t need to pee and I took 21 walk breaks instead of 22 (or whatever it was in reality.) And 2:01 is a totally respectable time for a half for me. And half of my miles were sub-8:50, which is a start. So why did I cross the finish line and feel just so defeated?

I’m not sure. Well, it was the walking. I joked about it being my Hungover Race and yes, I probably had too much beer the night before but honestly I really doubt it was that. Probably a combo of poor nutrition, being exhausted all week, running every day for a week (that never happens) and my legs being tired… there are many excuses. But that’s not the point.

    It’s my brain.

With how distracted I’ve been by life lately I simply have not had the emotional and mental energy to pour into running. I’ve acted like physical effort is enough but it’s not. When you step up to the start line, your physical prep has gotten you to that point, but it’s your brain that carries you through. It’s your mind who makes the difference between “I’ll stop when it gets hard” and “I’ll stop when it’s over.” I’ve been the latter. Yesterday, no matter how hard I tried to will myself back, I was the former.

This was very eye-opening for me, especially as my first “bad” race (I am new to running and this is only my 5th race so each one is some crazy learning experience). But I’ve also realized what I need to do. I don’t know what I need to do about the sudden inability to run a mile without stopping, but I’d love advice on that one. What I DO know, however, is that I need to work on my mental game. Whether it’s completely unrelated to running, whether it’s dropping to 3 or 4 runs/week and focusing more on crosstraining, or running sans Garmin, or just whatever, I need to do it. Running is supposed to be fun, and running a 2:01 half marathon, a few minutes slower than I ideally may have wanted, is NOT a failure. I went out there and I DID IT, it was good for my body and my soul, and it helps me realize what I need to do. I’m strong and capable and getting a new Worst instead of a new Best does in no way define me or take anything away from the mental effort I had to exert yesterday… even if it was my fault in the first place Smile

Great to see friendly faces and Dennis and Jessica pictured here PR’ed BIG TIME! They are inspirations to me.

    IMG_5044

After the race I got to hang out with some amazing people at Flames. I ordered what seemed to be the most decadent and amazing dish – the cinnamon French toast.

    RNRSJGroup

Dennis, layla, Audrey, RoadBunner in the back, Audrey’s parents, Renee, me, Naomi, Michelle!

    IMG_5059

It was quite good, but I was actually still hungry after. Darn distance running!

    RNRSJGirls

Anyways, despite not having the PR I wanted, I had a lot of fun at the race and would definitely come back—it was well organized and a good, fast course. I am so thankful for this opportunity and to be able to be a part of this amazing community. Here’s to the next, faster race!

  • SoMa Lunch Spots: Farmer Brown’s Little Skillet

    IMG_4553.jpg

I spend an amazing amount of time and money exploring lunch spots in the South of Market (SoMa) neighborhood and since my blog is in part about food and San Francisco, I figure I should start actually posting some of them. And luckily I have awesome coworkers who are often down for new lunch spots.

    IMG_4553

This week: Farmer Brown’s Little Skillet (website)

Description in five words or less: Chicken and waffles. Greasy. Delicious.

Location: 360 Ritch Street, SF, CA

    LittleSkillet

We headed down there at lunchtime to this cute, brick alley to grab a team lunch. Chicken and waffles for almost everyone, veggie grits for the two veg-heads!

    IMG_4558

They’re on 7×7 list of things to eat in SF before you die which means it’s legit.

    IMG_4554

Girl raved about the veggie grits. Pretty good. I’m getting the veggie po’ boy next time.

    IMG_4560

Chicken and waffles are a winner.

    IMG_4562

I really just go for the waffles and the syrup.

    IMG_4564

    Next time I’m getting dessert.

    IMG_4556

Great place and super fun. Not a sit-down place, just a walk up window. Take food back to South park (and hang out with me!)

    Happy Friday everyone!

  • Labor Day Eatventures

    IMG_4227.jpg

I REALLY, really needed a weekend.

Last week was rough with 5AM wakeup calls every day for booty-kicking bootcamps and entirely not enough sleep. Next week begins with a 4:30AM wakeup call to head to Utah for most of the week. Labor Day weekend, how I needed you.

Friday night I was pretty exhausted but I had big plans with my girl Talia for jam making. Yes, this is an important activity. I had delusions that I would leave work early but of course there was a nice handful of us in the office at 5:30PM on Labor Day Friday and that was when I threw in the towel and just left. I picked up Tali and her collection of pots and headed to my Haight Street Hobbit Hole. First, however, we needed grub. We headed to Kezar Pub in Cole Valley and split a veggie burger and a prawn quesadilla.

    IMG_4227

    IMG_4225

Then it was home for jam making. We used the same Strawberry Jam with Balsamic Vinegar recipe I’ve already posted on the blog and settled in for the long haul. Four hours to make 13 jars? Yeah. That. In the meantime we chatted about everything and even watched half an episode of the Bachelor Pad (barf. Never again!)

    IMG_4229

    IMG_4245

    IMG_4241

    COURTJAM

Totally worth it though in the end for great jam. A pyramid of it, in fact!

Saturday I was soooooo excited to sleep in after the exhausting week and my nearly-1AM jam-caused bedtime, but of course I woke up at 7AM and couldn’t get back to sleep. Boo. After a big breakfast fail and more successful second attempt, I hopped in the ‘Sub and headed off to Santa Cruz for a day on the beach.

    IMG_4257

    IMG_4261

A day on the cold, windy beach with my blanket wrapped around me tightly. Totally worth it though, as I got to catch up with some old friends from Peace Corps in Mozambique. It was great to get out of the city if even only for a day. We had pasta for dinner which brought me right back to Peace Corps big parties. Easiest way to feed a bunch of people when you’re cooking on a tiny charcoal grill! Smile

    IMG_4283

    IMG_4275

Sunday I managed to wake up in time for the Cheesy Run! I ran 10 miles, the majority of it with Katie, Alyssa, and Layla, which was great fun. I missed the Cheesy part of the cheesy run to hang out with a friend, but got to check out Café Flore on the corner of Market and Noe streets for the first time and enjoy my own cheesy spinach frittata. And it was a gorgeous day out. Perfect Sunday afternoon.

    IMG_4287

    IMG_4293

After a much-needed Sunday afternoon nap, I grabbed a couple jars of jam and jumped on the bus down to the Mission where I was going to meet Cate and Alyssa and their SO’s for dinner at Big Lantern.  got there early so I jumped in this random, crowded bookstore next door and grabbed two guidebooks, one for SF and one for Costa Rica. Can you say “next trip?”

Big Lantern was AWESOME! I really loved orange chicken back when I was an omnivore and their orange meatless chicken was spot-on. Granted, it was breaded, fried and covered in goopy orange sauce so I guess you can’t really lose, but still. Other dishes included the dim sum veggie combo, orange meatless beef, and kung pao tofu (I kept stealing bites off of Cate’s plate, it was so good).

    IMG_4297

    IMG_4301

The afterparty was outside of Cate’s car enjoying just a few too many of her vegan chocolate cupcakes that tasted like pure heaven. I don’t really want to even think about how many I ate. SO GOOD.

    IMG_4309

    IMG_4311

And this all brings me to today—Labor Day. I didn’t really make plans, which turned into working for at least 3 hours this morning (not ideal) and then absolutely needing to get out of the house as soon as possible. I knew I needed to do some more work online and a friend recommended Java Beach, the café right at the N-Judah turnaround at Ocean Beach. I was so excited until I got all the way out there and there was a long line, no tables, no one looking like they were going to leave anytime soon, and tons of people already poised to pounce. I had waited in the line anyway so I impulsively ordered a hot apple cider and then even more impulsively ordered a cookie at the counter to meet the $5 credit card minimum.

    IMG_4312

    IMG_4320

It took me about 20 minutes to get my drink and at this point it was almost 2PM and I was absolutely starving (had breakfast at 8) so I pretty much inhaled the cookie and then headed over to their sister café, Beachside, for half a vegan banh mi to go.

    IMG_4317

I LOVED banh mis when I was in Vietnam, but they were so good because of the delicious pate and sauce on them. This vegan version had a slab of tofu marinated in something, with onions, parsley, and carrot on it. It was pretty good, but also I ate it in what seemed like three bites as my stomach was on the verge of digesting itself. It’s probably REALLY good with the homemade aioli that I unfortunately eschewed.

    IMG_4322

Realizing I wasn’t going to get any laptop space down at OB, I hopped back on the N-Judah down to the inner sunset and landed at the Old Jerusalem Café, where I sit blogging and thinking about just how much I still have to do today. 4:30AM will come way too soon, but at least I’ve spend the majority of the weekend having a lot of fun with friends! And eating a bit too much.

Off to finish the blog, then to laundry and exercise! Hope everyone had a GREAT labor day weekend.

  • Weekend Roundup: Hiking, Street Food and Sunday Runday

    IMG_3944.jpg

Not going to lie, I had high expectations for this weekend. And it turned out to be… even better than I expected!

    IMG_3944

    DSC09707

    DSC09722

    DSC09721

Saturday morning I was finally participating in something I’ve been wanting to for a long time: hiking in Marin! I met up with Talia bright and early and we headed up to hike part of the Dipsea trail that runs from Mill Valley to Stinson Beach. (It’s also a famous footrace which, after hiking, leaves me 1. Convinced that anyone who attempts that race or God forbid the Double Dipsea is crazy and 2. Really wanting to do it.)

    DSC09709

The beginning of the trail was up, up, and UP! It’s funny how non-runners assume marathoners are in tip-top shape. Maybe we are in a certain way, but damn, walking up these hills at 2 miles per hour took the wind right out of me! But at least it was beautiful.

    DSC09712

I had a great time just hanging out with Tali. Ironically, it was beautiful weather in the city, but foggy as hell in the headlands. We slogged our way to the top of the hill that offers vast, breathtaking views of the pacific and saw… this!

    DSC09719

Yup. Pretty awesome. Reminds me of these people who I met in the Swiss Alps who had hiked thousands of feet up an alp just to see the same view as above and then turned back down.

I’m looking forward to seeing the view… someday!

We kept heading towards Stinson but it was really wet and got so muddy we were both literally slipping and sliding around so we headed back. All together it was a 6 mile hike and great cross training. I devoured a peanut butter and jelly (with our homemade jam we had just made!) and then we stopped by the Dipsea Café for coffee (for Talia) and a hot chocolate and biscuit (for me). I think our homemade jam is better than theirs. Smile

Next on the agenda was the San Francisco Street Food Festival. Apparently, 60 vendors from restaurants and food trucks alike came out to Folsom Street in the Mission to sell drinks, little bites (tastes for $2-3) and “bigger bites” ($6-8). I went to get good content for the blog but all my pictures came up craptastically. I ran into Alligator who has been mentioned on the blog a few times and he so kindly paused whatever he was doing often to aid in my photography or jostling of cameras and food, but alas: crappy pictures.

I am more than ever fully convinced I need a new digital camera. One can not blog on iPhone alone. Next paycheck…

Anyway, at the food fest, I had a small Thai iced tea, a little bite of fried yucca, and a bigger bite of Ethiopian food. Which I LOVE, but this was only okay.

I wanted to get the sweet potato pancake or the funnel cake or the ice cream, but I held out because I thought I’d regret it. I regret NOT getting those! A la The Last Crusade, I chose poorly.

Regardless, it was fun times anyway. Sunday brought a 5am wake up call (BARF!) but it ended up being totally worth it! I got picked up so kindly by Katie and Alisyn (from whom I lovingly borrowed these two pics) and we headed to Tiburon for Sunday Runday organized by Layla!

When the three of us arrived, we found Layla and Karin and set out for a four-mile warm-up jog. Then we hooked up with Naomi, RoadBunner, and Alyssa to run some more! People had asked me how many miles I wanted to do and I had said I didn’t know… I hadn’t even run 7 miles in the 3 weeks since SFM and had been feeling so off. But I did another 8 miles with a few of the girls for a total of 12.2 miles. I’ll take it! It was good to get some miles in but the best part was just having fun and getting to know a lot of these women better, I’m so glad I’ve gotten the chance to meet them all! Definitely has made life in SF so much better.

Something else that has made life in SF so much better: Genki Ramen.

The weekend came to a fab conclusion when I met Alyssa, Sandra and Cate for ramen. I choose poorly again, “branching out” to a rice plate instead of the caldron of ramen, but still. Delicious.

And we went to the candy store after.

Overall, a great weekend! This week is shaping up pretty crazy…

    • Wednesday: work Company Culture event and GrubWithUs dinner
    • Thursday: big meetings and Giants game!
    • Friday: Giants game again?
    • Saturday: Giant Race! Yes, I think I am running a half marathon this weekend. Word.

Okay, it’s past my bedtime. Goodnight everyone!
