I got a little delirious and ended up signing up for my fifth GrubWithUs dinner tonight. (If you haven’t seen my posts about GWU before, here’s the lowdown: signup for meal with 8 randos. prepay for variety of dishes, tax and tip. Go to new restaurant and get to taste tons of dishes while chatting with people you never would meet otherwise. Rad.) Tonight’s dinner was at Tajine Moroccan Restaurant on Polk street. I really like Moroccan restaurants and this has four starts on Yelp (a mark of success, no?) so despite being totally exhausted I was quite excited.
Starters came with really amazing, fluffy, and warm bread that reminded me of Turkish lavash (my people’s bread!).
To dip we had Taktouka (Bell peppers, tomatoes, parsley and garlic cooked in olive oil)…
Split Pea Dip (also with garlic and olive oil…)
And the vegetable bastilla (Baked ?llo dough stuffed with sweet vegetables, raisins, eggs almonds, and topped with powdered sugar and cinnamon.) This was AMAZING! Such a unique dish. Sweet yet savory, hearty yet light. It was so weird but so good.
Entrees included vegetable cous cous (Turnips, carrots, squash, zucchini and tomatoes sauce)…
The “casa tajine” (Green beans and potatoes prepared with olive oil, garlic, and spice)…
Laadass (Lentil prepared with B nut squash, garlic, olive oil and spices)
and Fassi Tajine (Artichoke heart and peas prepared with olive oil and spices).
There was a lot of food…
And bite-sized baklavas for dessert.
Everything was all right! The appetizer dips were very flavorful but I felt there was something missing from many of the entrees. fortunately, before I was done I realized there was homemade red sauce (hot sauce?) of some sort on the table. It made everything SO much better! A few of the dishes just weren’t spicy enough for my taste. But I wholeheartedly recommend the bastilla for the unique factor if anything!
Bed time. Thanks GWU for another fun evening of eating my way through an entire menu. ![]()
